LOUISVILLE – Northridge fell just short of engineering its second come-from-behind win of the day, falling 12-11 against Monarch in Saturday’s Legion B baseball state tournament.
Grizzlies shortstop Stephon Cunningham drilled a two-run home run, right over the 370-foot sign, to tie the game at 11 with one out in the top of the seventh.
The Coyotes came right back as left fielder Fred Good had a RBI single in the top of the seventh to put his team back up 12-11.
Monarch just held on in the bottom of the seventh. With a pair of runs in scoring position and two outs, Northridge right fielder Alec Wheeler (3-for-5, two doubles, two RBI) forced a full count but struck out swinging against Monarch pitcher Derrick Brown.
The Coyotes used a seven-run second and three-run third to grab a 10-4 lead. They added an insurance run in the fourth, but the Grizzlies were far from defeated.
Northridge quickly climbed back into the game with five runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Right fi

Andrew Romanoff is no stranger to uphill battles.
After college, he went to Central America to teach English. He started in Costa Rica, but wanted to do more.
“When he was in Costa Rica, he could have stayed there, which is a safer, more comfortable environment, but he went every day for a period of some weeks to the consulate – I believe it was the Nicaraguan consulate – to try to get a visa to get into Nicaragua,” Romanoff’s uncle, Bill Caplan, 63, said. “At the time that was a country that was politically unstable. It worried his mother. It worried us.”
Caplan told Romanoff he didn’t have to go.
“He said ‘No. I want to go. I need to do it,’ ” he said. “That, to me was very telling about his commitment.”
Romanoff faces an uphill battle in his bid to win the Democratic nomination for Senate. His opponent, incumbent Michael Bennet, has raised nearly seven times the amount Romanoff has and polls show Bennet leading.

As a small oscillating fan lost its battle with an oppressive July heat in a crowded east Greeley garage, Michael Bennet offered words of encouragement to his supporters just days before primary voting began.
“The polling looks very good on the primary, but we are not taking anything for granted,” he told the small group of supporters. “My sense of things is that this is no different than anything else if you work hard, you assemble a great team of people who are better at what they do than you ever will be, good things happen.”
The primary campaign against former Colorado Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff, which culminates on Aug. 10, represents Bennet’s third new challenge in a year and a half.
“When I think about what he’s done in the last 18 months, it kind of takes my breath away,” Bennet’s wife, Susan Daggett, 45, said in a phone interview with The Tribune. “He’s worked incredibly hard to understand the issues to the point where he
